Kanye West Gets Sued Over "Good Life Sample"

In a rambling lawsuit filed in Maryland District Court, Dayna Staggs (aka D'Mystro) is suing Kanye -- and his record label, Roc-a-Fella -- for copyright infringement. Staggs says that West "didn't obtain a license to use 'Volume of Good Life'" for his tune, and points out that Kanye was "only at the age of 6 or 7 years of age [sic]" when his song was written.

D'Mystro is also peeved because Kanye's song "contains vulgar and offensive" images and "harms the reputation" of his much cleaner song. He wants 85% of all world sales of the proceeds from the music that uses his work, though he doesn't explain how he came up with that number. Kanye's label hasn't returned a message seeking comment.

Real quick... doesn't Def Jam employ people that clear samples.. Someone is getting FIRED! - Oh and KanYe is gonna have to write a couple of big Checks to this dude.

Jay-Z And Lyor... Back In Business?

Cohen said that he and Jay have not discussed a label deal yet.

"I would be honored and privileged to work with him again," says Cohen, who signed Jay to Island/Def Jam when Cohen was there. "Bringing Jay-Z to the Warner Music Group would be a privilege and a coup. I'd do it in a heartbeat."

Cohen disputed the suggestion of Jay-Z running a "small" label. "Jay never does anything small or part-time," said Cohen.

First it was that he was leaving because the money was not right... Then he was signing a some type of label deal with Steve Jobs and Apple- We all saw this one coming 2 year ago... But if it does happen well..... Does anyone know Dame Dash's number im sure he has nothing else to do then to run the Roc again!

Roc-A-Fella Remaining At Def Jam ... For Now

Contrary to online rumors, Def Jam has not dropped the entire Roc-A-Fella Records roster, Billboard.com has learned. Roc-A-Fella artists include Kanye West, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, Tru Life, DJ Clue, Memphis Bleek, Young Gunz and Hector Bambino.

"Beans and Freeway didn't get dropped," says Beanie Sigel's manager, Mark Byers. "I just got off the phone with L.A. Reid talking about the next video for ‘Rain’ featuring Raheem DeVaughn that we're about to release. We're re-launching Beanie's project and releasing a ‘Rain’ remix with State Property."

Roc-A-Fella’s cohesiveness and brand strength waned after its leaders Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke parted ways in 2004. Since then, Roc-A-Fella artists haven't received the same attention as Def Jam stars like Ne-Yo and Rihanna, says an insider.

Jay-Z's inner camp, including A&R SVP Jay Brown and A&R VP Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith, tendered their resignations this month. However, the rest of Def Jam's A&R department is intact. Still, things are tenuous for hip-hop at the company.

Video: De-Haven is back...AGAIN!

De-haven is still on the BS... No one is listening! He makes no sense on the "why" he is exposing Jay-Z... and if they were to squash the "beef" (which I don't see) would they be friends again, De-haven had to think about that one... but I knew the real answer - "YES!" But he wanted to go the "fuck that dude" route and said No...but you had to think about it De-haven, didn't you? De-haven is not fulling anyone... He is after the gold and after that the platinum.

Jay-Z Talks Def Jam

The New York Daily News said last week that talks were stalling because you made some big demands. Is there any truth to that?
No.

So from your perspective, do you think you'll be at Def Jam next year?
Yeah, I think — I don't know. Let me not even say that. I don't know. We'll see how it goes. But seriously, it's not about money. That's really the last thing. Of course, as a person that does these type of things and puts his heart and soul into it — and it's effective, as the Grammys would indicate — you want to be compensated for what you do. But it's really not about money. It's really about the future of the music business, and not wasting anyone's time. I don't ever want to sit in a seat just to sit in a seat. I could be off doing something else that's beneficial to the future of the music business as well as myself. So it's not about money! I mean, you couldn't pay me enough. And I don't mean that in a cocky way.

Does something like these Grammy nominations change that equation for you at all? Does that make you excited about staying in this position?
Nah. I always knew what we were doing. Even if the outside world didn't know what we were doing, I knew the plan was to make great music and we'll get through all adversities, all the trouble of the music business, with great music. 'Cause great music gon' win at the end of the day. Not gimmicks, not fads. Just great music.
